Visitor visa vs visitor record: what wording causes the most confusion?

One of the most repeated misunderstandings is mixing up the visitor visa (entry document) with your visitor status inside Canada (how long you can stay). That confusion shows up in questions like: my visa is valid until X, why do I need an extension?

What explanations have you found actually click?
1) How do you describe visa validity vs authorized stay in plain language?
2) When someone wants to stay longer, what’s the first thing you check before talking about a visitor record extension?
3) What documents do people usually forget to keep from entry (stamp, date, conditions)?
4) What are the most common timing mistakes (waiting too late, mixing up processing vs status expiry)?

If you reply, mention whether the person is visa-required or eTA, and whether they are inside or outside Canada. Please don’t post passport or application numbers.

This mix-up causes real stress. A practical tip: on entry, note the date you were admitted and any stamped conditions. Later, when people talk about extending, the first step is usually “what is your current authorized stay end date,” not “how long is the visa valid.”

If anyone has a simple way they explain this to parents or relatives, share it. I’m especially interested in wording that avoids technical terms but still makes it clear why a visitor record extension is a separate process.
